The Brookdale Park Pollinator Garden now has a garden arch to support the large-leaved Pipevine (aka Dutchman’s Pipe), Aristolochia macrophylla, and coral honeysuckle, Lonicera sempervirens. Pipevine species are the only host plant for the pipevine swallowtail butterfly, so are needed in gardens to support this butterfly, whose numbers have been in decline. Coral honeysuckle is another native vine and is host to the hummingbird and snowberry clearwing moths, and the spring azure butterfly. It will also attract hummingbirds, who enjoy sipping nectar from its bright coral-red flowers.
Our Master Gardeners are hard at work in the community! This time in Caldwell, New Jersey.
At our monthly MGEC Meeting in June, we presented Jan Zientek who has led the Master Gardeners of Essex County for 21 years with a plaque for all his years of service. He was also given a lifetime honorable membership to our wonderful organization. He officially retired recently and he will truly be missed with leading the charge.
